To celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12, Londoners will be able to buy the world's first all black cheese toastie, a sandwich that has got people confused, intrigued and hungry.

The company behind the controversial offering is Norseland Ltd, who are celebrating the launch of their Ilchester® Black Cheddar Total Eclipse® slices. Norseland have teamed up with the famous Grill My Cheese to create a truly unique, all black toastie which is made from activated charcoal bread, Blueberry Chipotle BBQ Sauce and the star of the show, Ilchester® black cheddar slices. The exclusive sarnies will cost £5 and will be available from 12-2pm at the Grill My Cheese Leather Lane premises on April 12.

Lisa Harrison, Senior Brand Manager at Norseland comments: “Norseland has so many different cheeses so this year we've decided to mix things up, and after the huge popularity of the cheese advent calendar and cheese bouquet, we thought what better way to launch our Ilchester Black Cheddar Total Eclipse® slices than on National Grilled Cheese Day. Teaming up with Grill My Cheese has been an absolute pleasure, and we are so excited to showcase The Big Black – move over The Big Mac! It may not look like your usual toastie, but this will be one you won't forget, as it tastes delicious and the cheese turns completely black upon melting"

The bread is made with activated charcoal and the colour of the cheese is obtained from a combination of carob and cocoa powder. Carob comes from the pod of the carob tree which is native to the Mediterranean. The ripe pods contain a sweet pulp that is dried and roasted and then ground into a powder. When heated it melts perfectly making it the perfect cheese for a unique grilled sandwich or burger! The blueberry BBQ sauce is by Rubies in the Rubble.

Grill My Cheese co-founder Nishma Chauhan commented "When Norseland approached us with the idea of an all black cheese toastie we were intrigued yet a little perplexed. Once we tried the black cheddar slices we knew we could make their idea work. With the chewiness of the charcoal bread, smoothness of the black cheddar and the fruity hit of the black blueberry BBQ sauce, it just worked. It might look different, and it does taste different, but for anyone who is a fan of the dark side, it's a toastie you won't forget."
